Amy McLean

Children's Illustrated Books

Dr. Amy McLean’s passion for donkeys and mules began at an early age when her father introduced her to a donkey. Raised on a donkey and mule farm in Madison, Georgia, she grew up surrounded by animals that her family bred, trained, and showed—many of which became national and world champions. Today, Amy remains active in the industry, continuing to train and compete in hopes of developing the next champion. Her lifelong dedication to “long ears” has shaped a career centered on the science and care of donkeys and mules. As an Associate Professor of Equine Science at the University of California, Davis, she has traveled to more than 30 countries to study and advocate for the welfare of these animals. Dr. McLean has published extensively in scientific journals and is currently authoring the first comprehensive textbook on donkey and mule medicine. In addition to her academic work, she volunteers her time with several equine veterinary organizations, including the Equitarian Initiative, American Fondouk, and Lost Meadows—the only mule rescue in the United States. On weekends, you’ll often find Amy in the show ring with her companions Big Star Sarge and Moonpie, proudly competing and promoting awareness as ambassadors for mules.
